Work in the Netherlands with a foreign qualification

Start with the rules for your profession. In the Netherlands, recognition is required for some regulated professions; for many other jobs, employers assess qualifications themselves. Work or residence permission is a separate question.

Important — Recognition rules can depend on the profession, qualification country, and whether the work is temporary or permanent. The regulator makes the decision.

Search by profession and qualification country to identify whether the profession is regulated and which authority is responsible.

A practical first checklist

  1. Check the exact job title and whether it is regulated.
  2. Find the competent authority for that profession and ask which recognition procedure applies to your qualification country.
  3. Ask whether Dutch language proof, certified translations, exams, supervised practice, or registration are required.
  4. Check separately whether your nationality and job require a Dutch work or residence permit.

Your route is specific to you.

Profession, qualification country, work location, and nationality can all affect the next steps. Use the official sources above and request a guide for your exact route.
